Math 8 Students
Today we start learning more specifics about Dilations, the fourth of four Transformations (Translations, Rotations, and Reflections). We know dilations are not RIGID, unlike the other three, because the pre-image of a Dilation DOES change its SIZE after the Transformation into an image. That is, it gets larger or smaller. Translations, rotations, and reflections stay the SAME size. Notice in the Math Is Fun link below the differences and similarities between Transformations. Notice also that they call Dilations by a different name...RESIZING. When shapes keep their size, area, angles and line lengths after a flip, turn, or slide, we call them CONGRUENT and when they change their size we call them SIMILAR. Translations, Rotations, and Reflections create CONGRUENT SHAPES, while Dilations create SIMILAR SHAPES.
Click on the links in the MathIsFun INDEX at the bottom and go through each term carefully reading and completing ALL the activities and questions. The index includes:
1. Rotation
2. Reflection
3. Translation
4. Resizing
5. Congruent
6. Similar
7. Symmetry Index
8. Geometry Index
The Mathopolis questions are very important. Please make sure you answer every question for each of the terms in the INDEX.
Thank you. Email me at rkozak@voyageracademy.net should you have ANY questions.

Math 8 and Math 1
I have posted a number of assignments to complete on Khan Academy. Each assignment has 2-4 questions and should take about 5-10 minutes. Tonight students will begin these assignments and have all completed by Friday.
Math 8 students continue with Transformations. Specifically, they should know the four types of transformations and be able to describe each one. They are translations, rotations, reflections, and dilations. Translations slide up and down and left and ride. Rotations turn clockwise and counterclockwise and are measured by degrees. Reflections are like the mirror image across a line of reflection. Dilations are the only non-rigid transformations and are measured by their increase or decrease in size.
Math 1 students continue with Sequences. There are explicit and recursive and arithmetic and geometric. Students should know the formulas for each and how to identify the equation/function give a sequence of numbers. Students have been assigned Khan Academy homework to be completed by Friday.

Math 8 Abbreviations Assignment Due Monday at 8 am.
The assignment involves drawing initials of your first and last name in block letters onto the first quadrant of a coordinate plane. I demonstrated this in class using "Mr. K." Next, chose 4-5 key points (x,y) and assigned them a letter starting with A. Then I identified the exact points on the coordinate plane. Next, I chose a rotation of 90 degrees clockwise onto the 4th quadrant and identified the same key points and their placement in quadrant four. I continued using a reflection onto the 3rd and a translation onto the 2nd quadrant identifying each transformation and the new points (x,y) of the letters. Students began working on this activity on Friday and have until Monday, August 20th to complete. Send me an email at rkozak@voyageracademy.net if you need further information.
Monday, we will begin Lesson 6 Describing Transformations and Lesson 7 No Bending or Stretching.
We are still in need of some class supplies. I have an amazon wishlist here.....https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1C3D48NOZEB55?ref_=wl_share
Thank you.

Math I Families
The following link provides Math I families with access to Family Support Materials for each unit we will be studying this year:
https://im.kendallhunt.com/HS/families/1/index.html
We will be completing units from the Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry Courses. In the first Unit in Algebra I "One Variable Statistics" in Family Materials your student will be learning about analyzing data. Statistics can help us recognize trends in what is typical, as well as how far from typical we can expect to go. There are also video lesson summaries for Algebra 1, Unit 1: One-variable Statistics. Each video highlights key concepts and vocabulary that students learn across one or more lessons in the unit. The content of these video lesson summaries is based on the written Lesson Summaries found at the end of lessons in the curriculum. The goal of these videos is to support students in reviewing and checking their understanding of important concepts and vocabulary. Here are some possible ways families can use these videos:
- Keep informed on concepts and vocabulary students are learning about in class.
- Watch with their student and pause at key points to predict what comes next or think up other examples of vocabulary terms (the bolded words).
- Consider following the Connecting to Other Units links to review the math concepts that led up to this unit or to preview where the concepts in this unit lead to in future units.
